A Devastating Change Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States
One year ago, the environment was utterly separate. Prior to the national election, reflective Americans could acknowledge America's deep flaws – its injustices and inequality – yet they still could identify it as America. A democracy. A place where legal governance meant something. A country led by a dignified and decent official, even with his older age and declining health.
These days, this autumn, numerous citizens hardly identify the country we live in. People alleged as illegal immigrants are collected and pushed into vehicles, sometimes refused legal rights. The East Wing of the “people’s house” – is being torn down for an obscene event space. Donald Trump is targeting his adversaries or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities hand over an enormous amount of public funds. Uniformed troops are being sent into American cities on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Defense Ministry, has – in effect – liberated itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching close to a trillion USD in public funds. Colleges, attorney offices, journalism organizations are submitting from leader's menaces, and billionaires are regarded as nobility.
“America, only a few months ahead of its quarter-millennium anniversary as the world’s leading democracy, has crossed the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” a noted author, commented this past summer. “Finally, more quickly than I thought feasible, it did happen in this country.”
Each day begins to new horrors. And it's difficult to grasp – and distressing to accept – just how far gone we have become, and the speed at which it has happened.
Nevertheless, we know that Trump was legitimately chosen. Despite his deeply disturbing first term and despite the alerts associated with the knowledge of Project 2025 – despite the president personally declared plainly he would rule as a tyrant only on the first day – sufficient voters chose him instead of his Democratic opponent.
While alarming as today's circumstances is, it’s even scarier to recognize that we have only been nine months into this presidential term. How will three more years of this deterioration find us? And what if the three years turns into a more extended duration, as there is not anyone to restrain this president from opting that a third term is necessary, possibly for defense purposes?
Certainly, not everything is hopeless. We will have legislative votes next year which might establish an alternate political equilibrium, should Democrats regain one or both houses of Congress. We have government representatives who are striving to impose certain responsibility, for example lawmakers currently launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure from legal authorities.
And a national vote in 2028 could start us down the road to healing just as the prior selection put us on this disappointing trajectory.
We see countless citizens demonstrating in public spaces of their cities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.
An ex-cabinet member, commented this week that “the great sleeping giant of the nation is rising”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in the 1950s or amid the Vietnam war protests or throughout the Watergate scandal.
On those occasions, the unstable nation ultimately corrected itself.
He claims he knows the signs of that revival and sees it happening currently. As evidence, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a television host's removal and the almost universal defiance by media to agree to government requirements they solely cover approved content.
“The slumbering entity consistently stays inactive until some venality becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so disruptive, that it is compelled except to rise.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Maybe he’ll prove to be right.
In the meantime, the major inquiries remain: can America regain its footing? Is it possible to restore its standing globally and its adherence to the rule of law?
Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment functioned for a period, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?
My pessimistic brain indicates that the latter is accurate; that everything could be finished. My optimistic spirit, however, advises me that we must try, by any means possible.
For me, working in journalism analysis, that means pushing media professionals to live up, more fully, to their mission of holding power to account. For others, it may be participating in election efforts, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to safeguard electoral access.
Under twelve months back, we were in an alternate reality. In the future? Or three years from now? The fact is, we don’t know. The only option is to strive to continue fighting.
