A senior Russian general has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.
The attack happened on Monday morning when an bomb placed beneath a vehicle exploded, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov served as the head of the armed forces' operational training department.
Authorities mentioned that one possible explanation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Scene of the Attack
Officials have been sent to the scene, which is said to be in a southern district of the capital.
Accounts indicate the explosion took place in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.
Series of Assaults
Since the onset of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military personnel have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event comes after other high-profile incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.
While a source from Ukraine earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of official stance.
The war has witnessed covert operations moving into the streets of the Russian capital.
The investigation into General Sarvarov's death is still ongoing.
