Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its current sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
