‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic

Whenhe first time the Athletic striker featured in England, an teenage playing for the youth squad against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he found the net. The second time he appeared in the country, against the Black Cats two months later, he netted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, well, he repeated the feat. Upon his comeback to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in the 2017 season, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I became very upset,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. They kept me out of the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, the usual talk. It’s unclear how true it was, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is about to start; post-session, the brief trip to Loiu and a further journey to the UK, now to face Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. It has become a difficult season for the club, partially owing to the requirements of being here. Defeated late on in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. However, look at the overall situation, the big nights he has lived and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, the striker has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a final at home by United, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway flanked by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in 40 years. He’s now the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he admits.

He considered it hard enough just to make the first team and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player his father and a season ticket holder at the opposition side, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that developed the coach, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in that summer, he suffered a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but each step you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … you have to leave.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Several appearances at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I would go to training and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, you have everything, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. I look at photos of me before: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; no exceptions.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved in tears in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, dropping into the second division. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. At Amorebieta in the following period, the goals started to flow. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and when eventually a vacancy arises in your position, a return could happen. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was focused on persistence. From top scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
