Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of undesired gifts might be considered somewhat rude – except if it's done in the proper manner.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. A date has not been finalized, although the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds going to various charities.
Storage Room Holdings
These gifts reportedly locked away in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. It has been reported that Meloni furthermore intending to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away for years.
A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but some insight emerged earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was submitted to lawmakers. The question centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being followed. According to regulation, a prime minister must declare presents worth more than €300.
A Global Array of Gifts
Among the items:
- A woven wrap from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
- Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Maybe the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mainly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that build up during a time in office.
