Chicago White Sox Land Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Agreement.
In a major move for their retooling roster, the South Side team have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract with the high-profile player.
Deal Structure and Added Benefits
The agreement grants a substantial signing bonus, payable within 30 days, alongside salaries of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the following year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for being named the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for finishing in the top ten.
- Another $250,000 for winning the top rookie honor.
The agreement includes that he cannot be assigned to the farm system without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the term. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between the U.S. and Japan.
Compensation and Franchise History
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization get a 15% cut of any triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 soon, enters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are finished with a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the division but showing a 19-game improvement from the year before campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a historic 2022 season where he hit 56 homers, surpassing the all-time record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's coveted Triple Crown.

Over his eight-season tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has compiled a .270 career batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing primarily at first, he has more recently played to third base.

Murakami's clutch hitting were on center stage during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he hit a walk-off two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 win. The very next day in the title match against the United States, he hit a game-tying shot in the second inning, paving the way for Japan's subsequent title triumph.
The lefty slugger is slated to be formally introduced at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
