Three members of law enforcement were killed and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters approached the property close to the Verona region to carry out an removal notice for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the scene showed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the farmhouse was under an eviction order due to debts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the blast had occurred on a story above the entrance and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents told local news, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other elected representatives in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
