Far-Right Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Voted In as Chile's New Leader.

After a definitive runoff election, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Win

With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.

Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration

Noted for his unwavering socially conservative views and regard for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely built on promises to tackle increasing crime and drastically curb immigration.

He repeatedly blamed immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to depart before the inauguration or face expulsion.

His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing camps, border walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.

Within a Regional Wave

Several commentators view Kast's success as fitting into a larger rightward shift in the region, following recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other analysts further describe it as a extension of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right leadership since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Strong Majority

Despite his decisive electoral win, Kast will not command an absolute majority in Congress, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are combined together.

This political situation could challenge his policy goals, including a promise to reduce public spending by $6 billion within 18 months—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"We have numerous aspects about how a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will implement them," noted a political science professor.

The professor added, "On economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies common for the right-wing. But where there is considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse throughout the campaign."
