Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the nation.

Powerful gusts hitting velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled officials to halt in excess of 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

These gusts are impacting the whole southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the weather forecasting body.

New Zealand authorities have released uncommon red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones including Canterbury and Wellington.

Locals have been urged to remain inside, avoid travel, and prepare for additional electricity and network failures.

Broad Damage and Crisis Response

The power cut seems to be impacting residences mainly in the South Island, although agencies report that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Domestic outlets have reported that in some places homes have lost their roofs, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gales.

Across Wellington, a person was fatally injured after being struck by a falling limb at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a female was swept into approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a powerful blast, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Aircraft services to and from the urban area have been suspended because of the gusts, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

Simultaneously authorities in Canterbury have announced a crisis declaration, to assist disaster response efforts.

Strike Action During Harsh Weather

The powerful gales on today come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been called a "mega strike", demanding better pay and working conditions.

However the extreme weather has forced them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or cancelled.

Similar gusts are affecting the nearby nation, causing a high-temperature event to the remote areas.

Authorities have announced fire bans for fear of forest fires.
