Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became public.
The economist stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and look forward following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once led the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The recently released communications showed that Summers exchanged messages with Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of minors.
In additional comments, the technology organization stated it respected his decision to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," OpenAI remarked.
Legislative Background
This announcement follows after the entire Congress of Congress decided on Tuesday to endorse a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its records on Epstein.
The bill will then proceed to the office of the White House for approval. The President has said he intends to endorse the legislation, after changing his position on the matter following pushback from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-related emails made public by the House Oversight Committee days ago included several prominent individuals in the Epstein's former circle, without implying any criminal activity by those people.
The messages revealed that the professor and the financier dined together frequently, with the billionaire often trying to connect Summers to notable world leaders.
Personal Accountability
After the correspondence were released with the public, the former official expressed he assumed "total ownership for my poor choice to maintain interacting with Mr Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to restore trust and repair connections with the persons closest to me".
Professional History
The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and is still a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was no longer associated with the group.
The former official entered the board of OpenAI, which develops the language model, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its CEO the company leader.
