New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, even after months of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.
An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a liar” and accusing him of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.
“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have been affected by gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor remarked.
Adams continued, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been ignored in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and represented hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.
During a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if offered.
Months ago, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across the city.
At an separate media briefing on the same day, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “Andrew and I will appear together later today.”
The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated candidate debate.
