Russell Wilson Responds at Former Coach Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on social media this Tuesday, reacting to recent criticism from his former coach Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared via social media. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's remarks pointed to the notorious bounty scandal controversy from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the league determined that the Saints had incentivized players for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
What Sparked the Latest Dispute
The quarterback's response came after Payton delivered comments following Denver's historic 33-32 win over the New York. Payton suggested that the Giants had "found a little spark" with their new QB, who has taken over Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had told Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson over Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened well after our game,'" the coach commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season prior to the team brought in Payton, who was returning to coaching after a stint in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a move that ensured the player from getting injured.
If Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been locked in. Ultimately, Wilson was released, ending the ugly breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
