Slot Asserts He Is Safe and Retains The Club's Support After PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was natural for doubts to be asked about his position following a further convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in 12 games, representing the club's worst run since being demoted in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie title holders on a tough night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, things are alright, I have got significant support from the top,” the coach stated.
“It would be great to turn it around and secure a win naturally but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He added, “I accept my situation. This isn't the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Club Management
When asked to expand on his discussions with the team officials, Slot said:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He mentioned, “Through standard discussions I perceive the trust. However I haven’t spoken to them after this match yet so let’s see.”
Recurring Failings and Squad Reaction
Slot lamented familiar failings from his team in their European loss, namely wasted chances and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Jones was more direct in his evaluation of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones stated.
“It’s just not good enough. I don't need to wait to consider it. I’m past being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He continued, “It's difficult because I play for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Liverpool team enduring a phase such as this with results like these.”
Jones stated, “But we still have that badge on our chest. And until it is gone, we will always battle.”
“Our aim is to get this team back to the top, show everyone again the values of this club and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“However currently, things are bad and it must improve.”
