The beloved police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
