The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to multiple sources, the formalities for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
